Winona’s Music Bag

Last summer while browsing at Sarah’s in Lawrence, ARG spotted a french horn fabric and we immediately knew we had to buy it for my mother-in-law, as she is a french horn musician. The fabric sat in my cabinet until I found the perfect pattern, the Music bag from the Purl Bee website. I liked the functional details of the bag, a wider back pocket for sheet music and a smaller pocket for pencils or a cell phone, and a square bottom to hold a water bottle. To coordinate with the main fabric, I found the white note fabric for the lining at Sarah’s as well and a black polka dot at Jo-Ann’s for the bias binding. Other pattern details such as coordinating the fabric on the underside of the straps and extending the trim all the way around the bag were nice touches that made the bag that much more pleasing to sew. Last I heard, the music bag is working out very well for taking to and from practice and concerts.

Sally’s placemats

Yes, I know it’s nearing the end of February and I’m finally posting about my xmas gifts! Back in December I made a set of 6 placemats for my mother from the Amy Butler InStitches book. The best part about this pattern is that the placemats are reversible. Since my mom’s decor has a lot of blue, I used an aqua blue ty pennington fabric for the centers and backs and for the contrasting sides, a Jenean Morrison quilting cotton. Rolling the timtex inside the placemats was the trickiest part but overall a simple project. I ended up with quite a bit of leftover fabric, so I think I can whip up 2 more placemats!
